"Is the hearing test fit for purpose?"

Three weeks ago I awoke with almost no hearing at in my left ear. The local nurse syringed it, it made no difference and then the doctor referred me to The Princess Royal. I went yesterday to see a consultant. I have absolutely no problems with the staff, I was treated with respect and kindness and I didn't have to wait long. After the test the consultant said my hearing had got slightly worse but not by very much. However if I cover my right hand ear over I still can't make out many words simply with my left ear only. Shouldn't the NHS hearing test be leveled more at the spoken word rather that a series of unrelated pure sounds, it is after all what I want to hear, the radio, the television news and to converse with friends and family not whether I can hear top C or E flat. Even with roaring tinnitus I can make out the change in tone with the test earphones on but I couldn't make out a word. Perhaps a few standard sentences spoken by a mixture of male and female voices would be a more accurate measurement of hearing loss.
