I visited the Pain Management Clinic at Northern General Hospital this week. After waiting a considerable amount of time for an appointment, I was finally seen - after being referred by my main consultant - I went in feeling positive and looking forward to the appointment - but i came out feeling upset, confused and downright cross. The Doctor I saw didn't seem to want to talk to me about the problem, talked over me when i tried to explain things, seemed to talk down to me (insisting i didn't understand the cause of my pain!), and didn't seem overly interested in my input in my care - at one point I feel they insinuated that I may not actually be experiencing the pain, and that it was all in my head - and sent me away with a couple of leaflets - no follow up appointment (They didn't feel it necessary), no plan for treatment - told me to see my GP if i felt it necessary. As i suffer 2 chronic, lifelong conditions needing careful management - and after my consultant had referred me specifically because i needed a higher level of pain management - I've been left with no plan for further care, I feel my opinions were ignored and talked over, and I have been left feeling insulted (After Dr inferred that perhaps as well as me imagining my pain, it might be caused because I'm overweight - nothing to do with two well known chronic illnesses apparently!), and am sat with a very negative experience and wondering what to do next. Luckily I have an appointment with my GP in the next few days, as I felt this appointment was not satisfactory and I definitely wasn't treated with care and respect as I had come to expect from the NGH - I've never had an issue with any area of the hospital before - and I visit quite a lot! So very disappointed, and considering a formal complaint. Would not recommend this clinic from my experience this week.
