"Poor patient care following penile biopsy and circumcision."

About: University Hospital Of North Durham / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was discharged on the day I underwent surgery without an essential dessing. I left hospital bleeding, without any sort of dressing at all. This has delayed my recovery and been very distressing.

I was not given a written care plan (that would have told me what to do and not do following surgery) and therefore enhance my recovery time.

I bled so much from two surgical wounds that I almost ended up back in hospital.

I think the communication within the Urology Department is abysmal. I was promised biopsy results (to confirm if I had cancer) within five days, I had to fight (really, really fight to get the results) which it turns out they had for nineteen days, before I had to literally beg them to give me my results over the telephone. The "not knowing" whether I had cancer was tantamount to torture.

Staff were rude, unprofessional and disinterested. I was treated like an unwelcome parcel on a conveyor belt, instead of a human being with feelings and emotions.

I left a voice message for the Urology Department, asking to give me an email address, so I could send a letter of complaint, they never got back to me. This is why I am telling my story on this forum.

I think that if you go to the Urology Department for treatment, make sure you know what after care regime you need to follow and insist on a written care plan. I feel that you should not expect even a reasonable level of care as you are unlikely to receive it.
