"I attended A&E at the Norfolk ..."

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

I attended A&E at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital when my son was taken there by ambulance following a collapse. As he suffers from epilepsy, I assumed the collapse would be connected to this. But, very impressively, the doctor dealing with my son, assumed nothing and investigated everything. This doctor was very thorough, yet remained gentle and very tolerant with my son. As well as his own work, when nursing staff were not available, he carried out their duties as well to ensure my son was comfortable. He involved us throughout, kept us informed of what he thought and what he was doing, and when we left the hospital he even saw us out. Exceptional care with my son and I being treated with the utmost respect throughout.

What could be improved

It would have been great for there to have been enough staff on duty for my son to have been dealt with more quickly. But I fully accept the demands on the department are great and we are just grateful for the superb service we received.

Anything else?

This might already happen, but I wondered if there is a place for some voluntary staff to be available to help with the number of children who arrived with patients? I feel this could perhaps alleviate some of the pressure on the nursing staff.

On the behalf of colleagues in A&E we'd like to say thanks for your kind feedback. We'll make sure the lead consultant in A&E sees your comments, especially with regard to the doctor who looked after your son so well. We'll also highlight the suggestion about voluntary help for patients accompanied by children. Best wishes to you and yours.
