"Presented 0715h-still waiting and very thirsty at..."

About: Leicester General Hospital

I opted to use the accommodation offered by the hospital to allow me to present punctually for my operation-big mistake. I expected basic, clean standards but spent the night in a run down, smelly room with no facilities and no shower, just an enamel bath with a plastic jug for rinsing; not great when you need to use the anti-bac scrub prior to your surgery! I arrived punctually, and waited until about 1030h when I met the anaesthetist and changed into a hospital gown. 3 hours later and i am still waiting, having been told that an earlier operation took longer than expected. Fair enough, but there is no proactive communication from staff-I have had to ask why I am sitting here for so long. I am thirsty and now have a headache-dehydration kicking in, I guess. Why could I not have been offered a drink as soon as they knew there would be a delay? I am praying that the clinical standards will greatly exceed the "care" I have received so far. Please advise how much longer I can expect to wait and whether I will be going home this evening.

Dear Matthew, Thank you for taking the time to post your response. We are really sorry to hear about your experience of our Orthopaedics department at the General. We would like to look into your concerns further so we can improve our service for future patients. If you are happy for us to do so, please send me an email with your details (name, address, date of birth, hospital number) to yvonne.kenmuir-hogg@uhl-tr.nhs.uk and I'll look into this.
