"Disappointed by Podiatry treatment"

About: Biggart Hospital

(as the patient),

I recently attended two podiatry appointments in the Ayrshire area (the same podiatrist and location both times) and due to a very poor level of service I feel that someone needs to be made aware of this - it takes a lot for me to complain about poor service but feel very strongly about it.

On my first visit I felt that the level of service was ok but the manner and attitude towards me by the podiatrist was a little unusual, as though I was being given into trouble for the problems I was having with my feet.

On my second visit (which I had brought forward due to the level of pain I was experiencing), I felt that their manner was even more condescending and again felt as if I was being given into trouble. There were also a number of comments made which contradicted the information that I was given on my first visit.

When the podiatrist realised that I was getting a little emotional (because they were not listening to what I was saying) their attitude became slightly more positive, but it shouldn't have taken for me to become upset for them to change their attitude.

A couple of weeks later I contacted the podiatrist to ask if I could be referred for surgery as I could no longer take the pain in my feet and wanted to be referred to orthopaedics as soon as possible - their attitude stank and I have never felt so belittled by a health care professional before.

They agreed very reluctantly to refer me but again contradicted themselves from my first appointment. After this phone call I was extremely upset and comforted by a family member. They suggested I contact my GP to get some pain relief for my feet which I did that day. I know that podiatrists cannot do this but I finally felt that someone listed to me and appreciated how much pain I was in.

Dear Margaret,

I am very sorry to read that this was your experience with the Podiatry Service. This is not the standard of person centred care that I would have expected you to have and I am sorry it was so upsetting for you.

In order for the service to look into this matter further, would you be willing for a Service Manager to contact you direct where your concerns can be fully investigated.

Please let us know if this is suitable with you by contacting Eunice - eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone her on 01563 826222 where we will be in touch very shortly.

Yours respectively

Rhona Allardice NHS Ayrshire & Arran

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Margaret Taylor,

As you know we have done a bit of work in the back ground and you have now had another appointment at the Bigggart Hospital from the Podiatry service and I am very pleased to hear that you told me you were 'happy with the treatment I received'. Thank you for taking the time to let me know,

Best wishes for your future health,

Eunice
