I am 65 years of age. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis about 10 years ago and while visiting Aberdeen recently, I developed a severe pain and swelling (without injury) to my right upper leg and I called into Aberdeen Royal Infirmary A&E for help.
I was seen very promptly by a Junior Doctor (male) who was very reassuring and did everything he could to help (even providing tea/coffee & biscuits !) He sought advice from his senior (female) who again was engaging and reassuring. She was of the opinion that although without injury I had suffered a tear to the muscle but said she would arrange for an ultrasound scan to make sure that it was nothing more sinister. I was then examined by the A&E Consultant who gave the same preliminary diagnosis and suggested the same scan.
I should point out that each member of staff introduced themselves by their Christian names but due to my poor memory I cant remember any of the names!
I was very promptly scanned by a charming operative who again immediately reassured me.
The original diagnosis was correct and with the appropriate medication I am on the way to recovery. I still cant really walk to well but again that's the MS and nothing to do with my unknown injury.
If I had not been in so much pain and had already convinced myself that it may have been a blood clot, the entire experience would have been pleasurable.
Every member of staff that I came into contact with made me feel that I was their priority and that they really cared. A young female nurse who had only fairly recently qualified and had just started in A&E that week, took a genuine interest in my case and again that was most reassuring.
In conclusion I was delighted to see such a close knit and professional team at work and that no doubt was largely part due to the attitude of the Consultant who is fortunate to have an excellent team with him.
I have no doubt that being an extremely busy City A&E Department that the staff will at times be under considerable strain but their teamwork is a credit to all.
Please pass on my sincere thanks to all.
