On that evening, after several more abortive attempts, my wife did get through (total time spent trying was 45 minutes. The nurse she spoke to was pretty useless and told us that my sister's daughter was coming to pick her up (we were meant to) but she has only sons! I was left hanging around waiting to be told when we could collect her for the whole day, what would a phone call have cost the hospital in time or money? My sister had to phone us herself to arrange the pick up time the following day.
