"terrible physiotherapy service"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

I was referred to the physiotherapy department following surgery to my knee. I was given only the briefest of examinations by a physio on my first visit, where they didn't really appear to be paying much attention to what I was saying. I was then told I needed to come to a knee group twice a week. I attended four of these knee group sessions before I had to give up with them and go and seek help from a private physiotherapist instead. These knee groups consisted of little more than a production line of multiple people all going through a series of virtually identical exercises with only the most minimal input from a physiotherapist. The sessions seem to be run by a care assistant rather than a physiotherapist. The physio I had gave me barely two minutes input per session and I never once had the impression that they were listening to me at all. The blaring disco music which is on throughout the session does not help either. Why do they have this music on? It is the type of thing they have in keep fit classes when they are doing cardio work-outs, this music is not appropriate for people doing post operative knee rehabilitation. I was told that there are issues with insufficient staffing levels in this department which requires that patients have to be seen in groups rather than one-to-one. Regardless of this being the case, patients should be treated with more courtesy and at least made to feel as if they are being listened to, rather than the current production line it appears to be at the moment. Finally, I suggest the the physios try wiping down the patient examination couches between patients, as this is rarely done at the moment (yes we do watch what you are doing). At the very least, please start using pillowcases on the cotton pillows, or get some wipe clean pillows and wipe them in between patients using them. The hygiene standards in this department really are quite poor.

I am sorry your experience of the Physiotherapy service was poor. I can appreciate how upsetting and frustrating this has been for you. I will pass on your comments to the service and if you would like us to investigate this further please contact the hospital and we will be happy to do so. Thank you for taking the time to poston this site as it is comments such as yours that enable us to improve our services. Helen North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust.
