"I am grateful every single day to them for saving my life"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Cancer care and Oncology Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / General Surgery NHS Dumfries and Galloway

(as the patient),

Had diagnosis and treatment for renal cancer 3 years ago. The most terrifying experience of my life, but dealt with by an amazing team of people.

The radiographers were so kind, I had told them how terrified I was about my results, and they had rang my amazing GP with the results within a few hours who immediately rang me to put my mind at ease, she is what every patient deserves, but sadly doesn't get, what a Dr should be, and I thank God she was the first person I came into contact with during this harrowing experience.

The radiographers will never know how grateful I am to them for their consideration and kindness. The Consultant Mr Salanki, was so reassuring, professional and really considerate. The Nursing staff on the surgical ward, especially the pain control Nurse was, to use a term she will probably hate, an absolute angel ..there is nothing these wonderful, caring, brilliant people could have done to make a very traumatic and life changing experience any easier for me, and I will be forever grateful to them.

They are what the NHS should be, wonderful, professional, but above all caring and compassionate, and I will never be able to thank them enough. People have so many negative experiences when entering hospital, I can only be thankful that my own experience was dealt with in the manner it was.

I had counseling following treatment as I couldn't quite cope with what had happened to me, and again the consultant psychologist for oncology was just amazing, so supportive. My follow up treatment has been excellent, and my GP is always there for me when I need to talk, or need reassurance. I hope I never need hospital treatment again, but am thankful that when did I was dealt with by these incredibly wonderful people. I am grateful every single day to them for saving my life.

Dear bobby2012

Thank you for taking the time to post your story on Patient Opinion. It was wonderful to read your compliments and comments about so many staff. I am pleased you had such a positive and successful experience. The staff work hard and are fully committed to providing quality safe care and it will be a great boost for them to read such a nice posting.

I will ensure your comments have been seen by the various teams you mention. If you are able to provide me with the name of the GP surgery I can forward a copy of your compliments to them as well.

With best wishes for your health

Hilary

Update posted by bobby 2012 (the patient)

Dear Hilary, I am so pleased that the staff responsible for my care will be made aware of just how very very grateful I am to them. I did mention my GP by name but for some reason it was ommitted. She is Dr Shona Gilles, at the church place surgery Moffat, and is the most caring, considerate person I have ever met, she gave me so much support and I honestly don't know how I would have coped without her, somehow knowing she was with me made me feel less terrified.

I am so glad she's a Dr, she didn't miss her vocation ... thankyou all again so much ...
