"no help what so ever !"

About: Wexham Park Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

My 5 yr old has suffered with nose bleeds for 2 years now. had the creams and cauterised on 2 occasions. I took him gp and was told my son was not a priority even though he had a bad one that lasted 40 mins. the hospital said that its not down to them what priority he is in and wasn't very helpful. all I get is its not the fault then doc says the same. well I assure u its not mine either. my son is in pain and restricted on what he can do. even has them at school. they should be able to treat this and not getting any help at all! When I explained other options for him I was told he's not old enough well sorry its not good enough!

Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback - I am sorry that you feel like no one is helping you and your son. I've sent your comments onto our Ear, Nose and Throat team to see if they can help at all. I will come back to you when I've had a response.

Best wishes

Claire

I forwarded your comments onto Mr Moorthy, ENT consultant and he has asked me to share with you the following

5 year olds with nose bleeds is reasonably common and the common causes are either nose picking/ infection/ unknown or spontaneous.

Treatment is with first aid advice/ Vaseline/ naseptin cream or similar/ cautery. Unfortunately due to your child's age anything more aggressive is contraindicated.

Most children will settle down on their own but will be a problem for a few years and a lot of the consultation is providing information and knowledge to parents and managing their expectations.

If indicated we may refer for a paeds/haematology opinion to check blood clotting is within normal limits. If you would like us to investigate this further I need to know your child's details. Please email our PALs team on palswexham@fhft.nhs.uk or ring them on 01753 633365 if you would like us to do this.

Kind Regards

Claire
