"Disgusting level of care for the elderly"

About: Barnet Hospital

My father who suffers from mixed type dementia was admitted with Pneumonia to Walnut Ward. Firstly the nursing staff didn't even ask if I'd be comfortable assisting in cleaning my father, who is double incontinent, just stated that I should help with no concern for my health & safety, however I was told not to sit on my father's bed as could be contaminated from any bacteria, a contradiction to health & safety in itself. I was never asked if I was comfortable to administer medication, but on 2 occasions the nurse on duty just assumed I would administer medication. On the first occasion I informed the charge nurse however I received no apology, and no assurances, in fact I wasn't even told this was hospital policy (if it is actually hospital policy). Then again the following day the same thing. When I asked the nurse why they couldn't give the medication the nurse stated that as my father was drowsy it was dangerous to give the medication, however the nurse was happy to leave me to give the medication risking the possibility of choking. On another occasion my father's medication was changed & my family were only made aware when we asked what was being given. The charge nurse said to speak with the Dr, but made no attempt to call the Dr to address our concerns. As my family were leaving the hospital my father was attempting to come out of the bed. When we called for assistance to put him in bed the Charge Nurse lifted my father's foot by pulling from his toe with no regard to his health & safety, in fact putting him at risk of an injury, and as this nurse was leaving the room they had the audacity to complain about my father, stating he wouldn't sleep at night & was sleeping during the day. This nurse was rude and clearly lacks compassion & is in the wrong profession but clearly sets the example to their nursing staff. My father has been left in a soiled bed for over 2 hours after I have made them aware, God only knows how long prior to visiting he was changed & cleaned. However have on a daily basis found the Charge nurse & the nursing staff huddled at either reception conversing or in the staff office. Any time you call for help from the nursing staff you are made to feel your loved one is an inconvenience for them to provide care & that you are interrupting their important gossiping session. Thankfully the Dr's have been caring with the manner in which they are caring for my father but unfortunately main care is provided by the nursing staff & rather than do their job they will chat & expect you to do what they are trained to do then complain of staff shortages. My father is critically ill & may not sadly survive, however at such a sad time to have to endure the rude, disgusting behaviour & the lack of care only adds to the stress rather than alleviate concerns of care.
