"Breast Reconstruction after Breast Cancer"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

I had an immediate reconstruction after mastectomy. My new breast was created from my tummy area. The procedure is called a DIEP flap. I had not heard of it previously and thought how lucky I was to be offered this. My abdominal wall was destroyed in the procedure; my new breast was so huge it had to be reduced; and when my nipple was constructed it was put in the wrong place! So, with a diagnosis of cancer, I had to try and cope with all the devastating impact of prcedures that 'went wrong'.
