Having previous positive experience of Worthing Hospital, when it became necessary for our elderly loved one to have treatment for an undiagnosed condition, we opted for a spell in hospital rather than be treated at home. What a mistake and how we regret it. I'm not sure what has happened in the year they were last there but the difference is chalk and cheese. Probably the worst aspect is the lack of communication between staff members, be it a telephone conversation or face to face. You ask for updates on x rays/ scans and blood tests which they aren't aware have happened. They tell you that these procedures that you know have already taken place are due to take place in' a couple of days' !! You then can't find out the results even when they finally believe they have happened. In the meantime, with our loved one going downhill since being on the ward you question the ability and knowledge of the staff and wonder why, when you can see they are obviously very unwell, they are receiving no treatment. As part of our loved ones dementia they have some difficulty communicating and certainly aren't able to feed themselves or pick up a drink. So why leave a big meal on the table, all the info states they couldn't eat solids and needed help with fluids .Because of this lack of care and understanding, our loved one is wasting away before our eyes None of us are medically trained in any way but you don't need to be to see what is happening, As dementia is becoming more and more common, surely there should be a dementia specialist liaison? Why can't staff access information on a computer, Wouldn't it be easier to have patients names and all their current info and treatment logged so all staff can see it rather than go searching for someone to tell them?
"Don't go if you have dementia!"
