"Surgical team"

About: Southend Hospital

My wife has had a thumb joint 2 elbow joints and finally a wrist joint replaced by an excellent team. The surgeon should take great pride in running a surgical department that seem to all have the surgeon's professional and knowledgable skills, they are a credit. Despite the challenge my wife has given to the surgeon, they have achieved outstanding results, and we will always be indebted to the surgeon's unquestionable skills. I feel compelled to add I recently had a couple of major operations for bowel cancer, also performed by an excellent surgeon. All aspects of our dealings with the surgical department and surgeons in particular can only be described as professional and reassuring, however, a lot of other aspects leave a lot to be desired. My wife had polio as a child and lost the use of one arm meaning that the one that had all the operations on left her completely unable to help herself. After her first operation she was left to try to remove a bottle top and place a straw in the bottle on her own (which of course she was unable to do) as the nurse having placed the items in front of her felt that was sufficient without realising her problem despite the fact I had mentioned the plight to several members of staff on admittance. Her second operation had her en route to the theatre with the wrong name tags and her last operation on the 3rd of June bettered that by not having a name tag at all. We now understand the discharge procedure probable better than your staff as we know that if we are told we should be away by 10 a.m it is never before 4 p.m. We understand the problem of feeding the patients with minimum expenditure but someone should look at the plates with untouched food returning to the canteen, someone is kidding someone by saying the food is acceptable.. Whilst we are grateful to have blue badge parking feel with the costs incurred we have had either for visits or follow ups or consultations we have paid for our own ward. I trust these comments will help you understand the experience of two very grateful patients and would like to repeatedly thank the two surgeons.

Dear Sir, Thank you for your post and we appreciate your feedback. I will certainly ensure that your comments relating to the Surgeon's are sent to the relevant teams for them to view your appreciation and to acknowledge your thanks and gratitude for what they have done for both yourself and your wife. Reading through your other points I can see there are areas you feel are in need of improvement. We take patient comments very seriously and this feedback is very important to us. I can assure you I will look into these and speak with the relevant teams to look into the points. As a trust it is imperative we receive feedback such as this and appreciate you taking the time to contact us. If you do feel this is something you would like investigated you would need to put it forward as a complaint - this would need to be to complaints@southend.nhs.uk Wishing you well for the future. Regards, Louise McIver, Patient Involvement Team
