I was referred to the Dental Hospital due to having trouble with my wisdom teeth. I saw a lovely Consultant and the nurses who also worked with them made me feel at ease. The consultant was extremely sympathetic due to the fact I was so nervous, I have never had any teeth extracted or even a filling so the experience was all new to me. The consultant explained that I had two widsom teeth which needed extracting, one was a bit more complicated than the other so after giving me the options on pain relief I decided to try just numbing the area for the more straight forward extraction then on my 2nd visit I opted for the sedation for the more complicated one. My first extraction I was very nervous, I was shaking from head to toe but although I was numb I really didnt feel anything but still felt sick at the thought of what was happening. I was made very comfortable and the consultant and the nurses put me at ease and explained everything in detail as they were extracting my tooth. I then came back 2 weeks later to have my more complicated wisdom tooth out and had opted to have the sedation. I still felt a little nervous and apprehensive but once given the sedation I was so calm and relaxed, I was not shaking either, which would most probably put some dentists off especially when they are trying to take a tooth out. I had to have a couple of stitches in my gum after this extraction, then went home with my mum and slept for a few hours. I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell anyone who is nervous that if given the option to always go for the sedation, I cant remember anything about it, it seems as if it happened years ago and I found the whole experience much more pleasurable (if you can use that word in the same sentence as dentist), after having it. Although my first extraction was not traumatic in any way, after being sedated I now feel I am not afraid to go to the dentist anymore and now that my 3rd wisdom tooth is coming through I certainly will not be having any sleepness nights about having that one extracted. A great big thank you to the consultant and their team.
