My mother had decompression back surgery in mid-May. 2 weeks post op she was admitted to Addenbrookes hospital as an emergency with a very nasty infection. She will need to be on IV antibiotics for sometime and has been in considerable pain and discomfort.

The lady in the bed opposite to her in Addenbrookes had the same op by the same team in Ipswich 2 weeks before her and has had an infection which has caused loss of sensation in her legs.

I am concerned that something is going on which is causing a high incidence of infection and needs to be investigated.

I can only apologise for the delay in this follow up response.

The Spinal department is reviewing all appropriate cases to ensure that we have not had an increase in post-operative infections within this speciality but will act accordingly depending on the findings.

The Spinal service has a routine mechanism for monitoring its rates of infection and have no data at present that demonstrates that post-operative infection is rising or we are outlier in terms of infection rates with similar services.

We would welcome our patients to make contact with their Consultant and the spinal department so we can address their concerns and any care or treatment needs they have.

David Cummings, Consultant Spinal Surgeon, has now received details from Addenbrooke’s that there was indeed one patient with an infection that had been admitted to CU NHS FT, this had not been communicated with us so we could investigate. From examination of the case there was no changes that would be required and this would not change the position of our infection rates still falling within required standards.
