"23rd hospital admission"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

Unfortunately I am not a stranger to hospitals and surgery. Negatives that need addressing: awful, awful food, inedible. Toilets totally unsuitable for those with a stoma, no mirror, place to put supplies when changing etc. I found that bizarre in a place where me and the five other patients in my bay had stomas. Not the cleanest of places. Night times were dreadful: too well lit, noise, nurses shouting to each other, drip alarms bleeping continuously. If rest, sleep and diet are crucial to healing and recovery then you have no chance! Positive points: it was the best nursing care I have ever experienced. The staff were also the most pleasant I've experienced too. Communication was an issue but in all fairness they were rushing around like mad as there never seemed to be enough of them! (hence why drip alarms went off all the time, or they needed to shout to each other at night). I felt sorry for the staff, they had to work so hard! An example: I vomitted 5 times on the floor and pressed the call button before I started being sick. It was ten minutes before a nurse came. It is not their fault they are short staffed and I hope this will be addressed. Another positive thing was pain relief. This was controlled brilliantly and I was worried about this having been left to suffer in other hospitals. The stoma care nurses are excellent. In summary the most important thing is nursing care, and it was fantastic and I would thank the staff very much for that.

Dear Sir / Madam, Thank you so much for this very detailed review. There is much we need to learn from it and I am so grateful that you've found the time to share it with us. As someone who has been admitted into hospital on 23 occassions your lived experience and expertise is invaluable in informing our improvement efforts. Whilst I am delighted that our nursing care is is the best you have ever experienced anywhere, there is also clearly a lot that we didnt get right for you and I am very sorry about that. I wonder if you would mind sharing your telephone number with us prviately ? I would be very keen to have a more detailed conversation with you so that I can share the details and insight with our staff and management teams. My email is annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk if you'd be willing to get in touch. with all best wishes, Annie
