Last night we had to visit children's A&E following our nephew falling off a goal cross bar and injuring his arm. We arrived between 8.45 and 9 and the very pleasant receptionist informed us it was aprox 1 hour wait. We were triaged very quickly and sent immediately for an X-ray our nephew was in pain and was given medication all very efficient . Children's A&E is a very stressful place With lots of children in pain all very grumpy and frightened of the unfamiliar surroundings not to mention the stressed out tired parents the nurses do a wonderful job but they need Doctors and last night was very busy and the poor nurses had no doctors. We waited 3 and a half hours after the X-ray and had still not seen a doctor our nephew is 11 but lists of family's had small baby's and siblings with them surely parents anxiety levels must be through the roof and have a knock on effect to the children not a good place to be a one oclock in the morning. And unfortunately the poor nurses were getting the brunt of it. The one Doctor that appeared to be on was seeing aprox 1 patient ever 45 mins seemed to spend a lot of time chatting and sitting at the computer . A&E is a 24 hour operation and surely should be staffed equally day and night we all know that children don't chose to get ill or have accidents between the hours of 9-5. We saw many patients walk out and did eventually ourselves . He was brought back this morning and told his arm was badly bruised and sprained why did we wait 3 and a half hour last night still not to have been told this . Last night when we arrived the main A&E was very quite but the children's Department appeared to be getting no support which raises the question how many doctors were on duty last night.
