"Minor Injuries - most useless Nurse Practitioner..."

About: Southmead Hospital

I visited the Minor Injuries unit tonight, after struggling for a few weeks with a sore wrist. When I saw the Triage Nurse I was extremely happy as they were sympathetic, and listened to me and agreed I should get it checked out. Unfortunately the Nurse Practitioner I saw was the opposite. I have Hypermobility Syndrome which I always mention, and I'm pretty sure that I've suffered a partial dislocation and I've got something trapped in my wrist. I explained all this, and they examined my wrist, felt a slight swelling and said it was a tendon and gave me a splint. When I said that if I didn't move my wrist it seized up and hurt even more, they gave me a leaflet of exercises. When I asked how long it was likely to take to heal, as it's been hurting for 3 weeks and is getting worse, they said it could take 3 weeks, and when I pointed out it's already been 3 weeks, they said "well it could be more than 3 weeks". Basically I felt like they didn't understand what hypermobility is, and didn't really listen to anything I said. Luckily I've got a Drs appointment coming up soon, hopefully they'll be more useful.

Response from Southmead Hospital

Dear Anonymous – I am sorry you had a mixed experience at the Minor Injuries Unit recently. Clearly as part of any assessment staff should aim to reassure patients and answer all their questions and I am sorry this did not happen for you. Standard advice in such a situation would be to seek a second opinion from your GP if you still had concerns and I was pleased to hear this is what you intend. I hope that your GP was able to reassure you or take appropriate action to help. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your views on the service. Your comments will be shared with the team concerned. Kind regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
