"NHS Choices VS NHS24"

About: NHS 24

(as the patient),

I like many other Scotland based people, am exposed to alot of media promoting and singing the praise over NHS CHOICES and cross platform web access tools. On exploration I am amazed at the content rich resources only to evetually discover it's not intended for any one else in the UNITED Kingdom (NB use of UNITED) but England. I then discover that NHS24 is the Scottish equivalent to the resource but cant help but feel that it is not as robust and end user friendly as the England centric NHS CHOICES counterpart. I realise that NHS is a devolved subject in Scotland, but my tax contrbution and NI contribution is earned/paid as a UK citizen. Please reconsider amalgamating the NHS reference service online as one resource? .

Dear ESCOPANA

Thank you for your feedback via Patient Opinion. I read your comments in relation to NHS Choices and NHS 24 (NHS Inform) with interest and I have shared this with the NHS 24 Head of Health Information Services.

It may be helpful if I explain that NHS Inform, which is hosted by NHS 24, was established in 2010 in response to the Better Health, Better Care publication which highlighted a number of challenges in Scotland in relation to the provision of robust, co-ordinated, quality assured health and care information for the population of Scotland. The key difference is that the content within NHS Inform is developed and maintained with key specialists from across Scotland reflecting the difference in legislation, policy and practice. Where appropriate, NHS Choices does share content with NHS Inform, I.e. our A-Z content is provided by NHS Choices and this is referenced within the content itself.

Your comment is very timely as NHS Inform is currently being redeveloped to provide a platform which is more engaging through the use of interactive tools to support self management as well as providing more audio and video content. The refreshed site will be available in Spring 2016.

I do hope that the above information is helpful to you. Should you wish to contact me directly, my telephone number is 0141 337 4582 or alternatively, you can email patientaffairs@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

With kind regards

Shona Lawrence
