"Sheer Professionalism, endorsed with compassion"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

At 8.30am on Wednesday 27 May I visited my GP to be prescribed antibiotics for an apparent foot infection. Being a type 2 diabetic since 1993 I am very aware of the necessity to avoid blister activity around the feet. My next port of call from the GP was to the podiatry at the Heath Centre. In that short journey I began to suffer the most violent of rigours, shivering, blinding headache the works. I am thankful the wife was driving otherwise the outcome doesn't bear thinking. At Trinity my distressed wife went for help and the first on the scene was the podiatrist and the diabetic nurse. There assessment relieved the pressure on my wife who was not witnessing her husband at his best. The ambulance arrived within 4 minutes and the crew were exact and professional. I recall the oxygen mask being placed then the journey was complete by admission to the QE. My complete thanks and gratefulness goes to the A&E team, The Critical Care team, the Microbiology team and the Orthopaedic teams, who together battled the septic infection that was in my blood stream. I had x-Rays, CT scan and so many other procedures it was so surreal that I was receiving such magnificent attention. I must reiterate that those combined professionals no doubt saved my life and if I had all their names I would individually and personally thank them. At 10.30 that night I was transferred to ward 12 PIU and my after care from the team lead by staff nurse was first class. This continued in the morning with staff. Over the week I had every type of antibiotic known and was nursed by very compassionate and thoroughly professional staff who often I observed were placed under increased pressure by the demands of other patients. They handled everything very courteously and without argument even when over zealous complaint was being aired. Bless them all. Even the house keeper gets a mention as does the domestic who took their fair share of complaint and compliment with respect and tolerance. Their input to my care was greatly appreciated. I am now home, a week on. I have to continue with a very strong combination of antibiotics for another 8 days. The illness I won't wish on my worst enemy, it wasn't pleasant and for such a simple infection to be so vicious is amazing. However I can only repeat the medical services I received has given me an experience I can never forget . It is easy to complain and many do , few perhaps with valid reason. I though wish I could make more of my praise. Thank you once again you professional and compassionate people!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your positive journey with us at QE Gateshead. It's not often that people understand how many different staff are involved in just one patient's care, and it's amazing how well you understood this! We've passed on your comments to the matrons and departmental leads for everywhere that you mention as we know they would love to read this. If you wanted to help us spread the word about the good work we're doing at the QE you can email comms@ghnt.nhs.uk
