"My mothers final journey"

About: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

My 90year old mother was admitted to the A and E department at 11pm on Tuesday 28th April 2015. The corridor we had to stay with her in until 1.30am was awful, cold drab and no adequate seating for us. The staff that attended my mother on A and E were very nice to her and to us, the awful thing was that there is no privacy, therefore other patients could hear what we were saying to the medical staff and vice versa. On the morning of 29th she was transferred to F2 elderly care ward, the doctors and all the staff here were fantastic, showing so much care and kindness to my mother and ourselves, I cannot think of one single thing that was not good on this ward. Sadly my mother passed away on F2 on the morning of the 9th May 2015, we had been able to be with her as a family from 2am that morning until she passed away at 8.15am, the staff on duty that night were fantastic and the staff that came on duty the next morning were very kind, the only thing that would have been nicer and I am sure that other families would say the same, it would have been much nicer if when its known that a patient is going to die that they should be transferred to a side ward, for their dignity, for the family members and above all for the other patients that are on the ward, just because they are elderly does not mean that all of them are senile which was the case that morning which I felt very sad about for the rest of the patients.

Response from Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

Thank you for your feedback regarding our emergency department and F2 ward. Please accept my sincere condolences on the sad loss of your mother. It is always good to know that the care and treatment our staff provide to patients, old or young, is of the high standard we aim to achieve. However I am sorry for unfortunate wait in the emergency department corridor and that we were unable to transfer your mother to a side room, which as you say would have been nicer. I have shared your comments with the clinical leaders and with the staff in these departments who I am sure will be greatly encouraged by them. Mary Edwards, Chief Executive mary.edwards@hhft.nhs.uk
