"Following a collapse at the Tate ..."

About: St Thomas' Hospital (London)

(as the patient),

What I liked

Following a collapse at the Tate modern, and a walk along to St Thomas', I ended up in A&E. I appreciate that it is a difficult job, but I ended up waiting nearly 6 hours until my urine test was complete and I was sent through to the Urgent care unit. When there, I heard many people screaming in pain, and one particularly rude man, who insulted his nurse. The nurse did his best to remain calm and proffesional, but I cannot blame him for becoming slightly annoyed.

I was diagnosed with acute pyelonphritis and was given an IV and blood tests. This was carried out EXTREMELY well, and was hardly painful at all. When placed in the CDU overnight, I was left on my own, with no contact with my family or girlfriend. Also, I was given no updates on my condition throughout the night.

the next morning, I was given breakfast by someone who really brightenend my day. Then, the consultant eventually came to see me who was very friendly and proffesional, and reassured me that my kidneys were functioning properly. This was a releif as i had overheard them discussing dialysis for me the previous night. This was hardly reassuring.

Overall, I was happy with my care, and left feeling relieved to be alive and well.

What could be improved

My only problem, is that having been reccomended that I gave my wallet etc to my girlfriend when she left the previous night, I had no money to buy refreshments after my discharge. The staff were aware that I had a 3 hour wait until I was picked up, but they made no effort to ensure I was given a drink (especially important given my condition). I instead had to rely on a very kind volunteer worker who bought me a drink using their volunteer card.

Anything else?

I went for a nice walk after my discharge (more of a painful shuffle) accross Westminster Bridge to look at the houses of parliament =)
