"Urgent appointment, isn't so urgent"

About: Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was on holiday and I started bleeding vaginally on recently, but it stopped within a day. However on a couple of weeks later it returned worse than before. My concern was I take a drug which could affect the bleeding, so the bleed was a concern.

I phoned my GP and was advised to go to the hospital.

The Spanish hospital was clean and the staff efficient. I was given a blood test and the doctor stressed that they were treating the emergency bleed, not its cause. As my blood count was normal, I was allowed to leave, with two medications, but warned I must return immediately, should the bleed get worse.

We were due to return to UK a week later, over the next few days the bleed got less. I saw my doctor in Fife. He examined me and referred me immediately to the Gynecological unit at the Victoria Hospital. I know post menstrual bleeding can be a sign of cancer and as I had abdominal pain, which my GP had stressed, I was confident of a quick appointment. I phoned the unit today to be told my "urgent" appointment was to be in 19days! ! The receptionist was puzzled that I found this unacceptable, as it was within four weeks. We, as women are told to immediately take advice when we have any irregular bleeding, mine also had the added problem of my anticoagulant medication, so I am really disappointed that I may have to go privately in case I have cancer.

Dear Conchita 1214

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experence. I was sorry to hear of the problems you had on holiday and of the ongoing concerns you now have. I appreciate this is a worrying time for you. I could at this stage give a lengthy explanation regarding categories of waiting etc; however I do not think this would be helpful to you and I think it would be more helpful if I could speak to you directly to see if we can look into the specifics of your case.

My cotnact number is 01592 648069. If I am out of the office leave a message for me specifically, referring to Patient Opinion and I will get back to you.

Regards

Louise Ewing
