"I consider my treatment to be appalling"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

In mid-May, my GP came to see me and wanted me admitted to Lincoln County Hospital as an emergency. She told my husband to take me to the emergency admissions ward. Before we left the Hospital rang and said to go to A&E instead.

I had open heart surgery 5 weeks earlier and had been increasingly short of breath since. I had a been having night sweats and fevers and a high heart rate. By the time I arrived at A&E I was gasping for breath, I went in to see the nurse who said my chest was clear and my oxygen good even though I could barely speak, she said I would go for a chest X-ray and then to wait outside. I was still waiting 3 hours later even though my GP had wanted me admitted as an emergency, by this time I was so ill my husband complained to reception who told him there were 3 more people in front of me.

When I finally got to see a doctor she checked my X-ray and found I had pneumonia and pulmonary oedema. there was no bed for me so I was left in an examination room until one could be found. I arrived at A&E at 10 30am and was finally found a bed in the emergency admissions ward about 6pm. I was in hospital for a total of 10 days.

I consider my treatment in Lincoln A&E to be appalling

Dear Boleyn

Sorry to hear you had a less than satisfactory experience when you visited A&E; due to the issues you have raised I would be keen to investigate this with the individuals concerned, to do this I will need your name and date of birth. Please can you contact Sharon.Kidd@ulh.nhs.uk with your details if you would like me to investigate this further.

Regards

Karen Hansord – A&E Sister
