"Avoid the pharmacy"

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital

I attended Accrington Victoria with my son due to a facial injury. He was cared for excellently by staff there but as they required him to be reviewed by a consultant we were transferred to royal Blackburn. Again the staff in paediatrics were really good and efficient. He was treated and given a prescription which unfortunately you can only retrieve from the hospital pharmacy. A small child with a severe head injury did not appreciate having to wait in a hot and crammed waiting for 45 minutes before our order was ready. It was not until we returned home that I noticed the pharmacy had incorrectly labelled his medicines. They had put him on a lower dose than the consultant had prescribed. I was so glad it was only antibiotics they had made the very serious error with or I dread to think what might have happened had it been a more potent drug. Could have been fatal.

I will make sure your praise and concerns are passed onto the teams involved. I am very sorry to hear that all your recent experience with us wasn't what you expected as we always strive to deliver safe, personal & effective care. it is concerning that the wrong dose of medication was dispenced, it would help us greatly if you were to contact us as we would like to identify what went wrong and learn fully from this experience. If you would like to talk through your visit to us with one of our Patient Experience team so we can understand the bits of your experience that made this a mixed experience for you we would really value this so that we can try to improve things for every patient visiting our hospitals and services. You can either contact me (Meg Davey) on 01254 733698 or email me on Margaret.davey@elht.nhs.uk.
