"Failing to read patient notes"

About: Vale of Leven General Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I've been waiting on an operation for months now and when the date of the operation arrived I was slightly disheartened as to the date (it was when my holiday was booked for) so I cancelled the holiday. Lost deposit.

I turned up on the day at the VOLH at 8am, was taken to the ward, spoke to the sister got weighed measured, then this surgeon turned up only to tell me that the operation would not be going ahead as I was on a medication that would put me at risk of infection. Well I've been on that medication for five years, so it is well documented in my files. So why wait till I cancel holiday, turn up for operation and then tell me it can't be done?

Under the patients rights act 2011-12 I am well outside the scottish goverment guidelines to have treatment. I've tried to phone the orthopaedic secretary and all I get is a machine saying she's not available.

I feel the system is all wrong and the consultants do not read case notes properly.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

I am so sorry that you have had this experience - I can completely appreciate how frustrated you must be feeling, particularly given the additional inconvenience of your cancelled holiday. You are right to say that any issues regarding your medication should have been noted in advance of your operation and I am sorry that this appears to have caused a delay in your treatment.

It would be really helpful if you could contact me directly so that I can look into this in more detail for you - my email address is lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. I hope to hear from you soon to take this forward for you.

Kind Regards,

Lorna

ive now been given a new date for operation but they say I will have to come off certain meds.

I also seen my gp to ask him and he stated that the meds that im on I should not stop so im damed if I stop the meds and damed if I dont.

Life has really became a lottery since I became unwell and to think I went into hospital 4 years ago with pneumonia and caught swineflu, norovirus and ecoli when I was in there [ erh ] and that triggered the illnesses I have now [ischamic heart disease copd ].

They say the copd is due to smoking but when I was young we had things like coalfires pariffin heaters and I worked in heavy construction for most of my life so I blame things like that, not just the smoking. Admittedly it probably didnt help.

Thinking about it though, say I was to have some sort of accident and I needed surgery quickly would they operate or would they not, because im on certain meds it really is a lottery.
