"No doctor available"

About: Southern General Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

Attended on in May arrived at 7pm waited over 3 hours no beds available. After triage sent back out to waiting area to wait after making reception aware that I could no longer stand as I am on crutches for back injury.

Was taken through to bed in cubicle at desk area became aware that the doc on duty had worked past the end of her shift and was leaving. Nurses asking another nurse whats the system, and just a general feeling of chaos. Realised that no other doctor had actually taken over after waiting a further 30 mins got up from bed and left. Nurse was very apologetic.

Obviously not the staff at fault ...hope I do not have to go back to A&E any time soon! And astounded that there was no doctor on duty? Hopefully a doctor did appear?

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Mcenguy,

We are extremely sorry that you experienced a delay and left before being reviewed by a doctor.

We do have doctors on duty at all times in the Emergency Department but all patients are reviewed on the basis of clinical priority. If a patient that was clinically more unwell arrived in the department in the intervening period while you were waiting to be reviewed, the doctor would be redirected to the patient with the highest clinical need. I can only apologise that another doctor did not manage to review your position in a more timeous manner.

Yours Sincerely,

Debbie Ambridge,

Clinical Services Manager
