I had been suffering badly for over a week with severe back and leg pain, had seen a doctor twice and made several calls to NHS 111. In the end the pain was so bad that I called 999 myself, It was such a relief when the paramedics arrived; it took about an hour to get me off the bed and into the ambulance as the pain was so bad when I moved. The 2 paramedics were brilliant and really reassuring in what was a painful and embarrassing situation The A and E was very busy but I only waited a short time and was seen very promptly before going to the EDDU ward for further investigations. My leg pain was because of sciatica caused by a slipped disc. Over the next couple of days I had an MRI scan and then received cortisone injections in my spine to help ease the pain. I then spent 2 nights in ward 5 and would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff with whom I came into contact. Hospital could be a dismal experience even for the most optimistic person, and I truly thought the staff were so kind, helpful and cheerful. Everyone introduced themselves politely and explained what they were going to do. The HCAs were really pleasant and smiley and work so hard. At times I did feel a bit of a fraud as there were plenty of people worse off than me, however my main and overriding impression was that every patient was valued, some people like to complain and moan, (loudly) however all were treated with tolerance and compassion. i never normally leave reviews, but I do think it is important to do this; the NHS is often blasted in the media and has latterly been a political football. Negative stories are rushed to the headlines and politicians sling the blame back and forth. At the end of the day it's people who matter , not the paintwork, and I'm so grateful for the care I received and want to say thank you to everyone concerned.
