"Not having the care I needed when nil by mouth"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

Recently I went to East Surrey hospital for a flexi sigmoidoscopy and biopsies.

I entered the department at 10 30 was able to drink up to 12 pm but waited 5 hrs before surgery. I was expected to be nil by mouth all this time? I have a ileostomy so I spend all day every day fighting dehydration so I told the surgeon and the pre op assessment nurse I need to be on a drip but it took 90 mins before they finally got one on me - My veins were almost collapsed. It took 2 attempts to get the cannula in and now I have a lovely bruise from the 1st attempt.

I am totally disgusted with this. I know my body and have been in this situation many times and every time it is very distressing to me and my husband.

I was in hospital 16 yrs ago for 6 weeks while having my colectomy surgery and it was not a very pleasant situation so I have a huge phobia of hospital and it is made worse when this mistake keeps happening.

I am now awaiting to go back in soon for major surgery to remove my rectum and my ovaries and this is now distressing me even more after this recent occurrence.

Response from Fiona Allsop, Chief Nurse, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust

Dear Kira

I am sorry that you were not able to drink for such a long period and that it left you distressed about your future surgery. If you would like to contact me on the following email I will arrange for one of the surgical matrons to talk with you and discuss further.

Best wishes
