"Lack of privacy for blood tests"

About: NHS Lanarkshire

(as a carer),

Mt elderly mother was sent upstairs to the first floor of Wishaw Health Centre recently to phlebotomy to have blood tests taken.

Instead of taking her into a room to have them done, the nurse/HCA performed the task in the large waiting room in full view of other patients. It left my mother embarrassed and feeling degraded.

This is totally unacceptable and has now left my mother scared to go for further blood tests.

Dear Suelanarkshire

I am extremely disappointed to have read your comment on the lack of dignity with which your mother was treated at Wishaw Health Centre and would profusely apologise for the embarrassment and upset that this may have caused. I will investigate why this situation arose and respond further to you when I have fuller information.

Richard

Dear Suelanarkshire

I’ve contacted the Team Leader at Wishaw Health Centre who was shocked to hear of your experience. I’d like to reassure you that this is not standard practice and it would help me greatly if you could contact Laura Bryan my Patient Affairs Manager to supply some further details as I want to investigate this as a matter of urgency.

If you are able, please contact Laura on Tel No: 01698 858321.

Update posted by suelanarkshire (a carer)

Thanks Laura, my mum received the form but has not been well but is happy that her concern has been raised. As discussed, she does not want to make a fuss and is content with the assurances that it will never happen again and wishes to leave it at that.

I hope lessons have been learned and that procedures are now in place to ensure all blood work is undertaken in a clean, safe and private environment and that the elderly are treated with respect and dignity.
