"Fathers care on Sunday 22nd March!!!"

About: Worcestershire Royal Hospital

My Father's care was shocking and disappointing! As a senior nurse myself who has worked in the NHS I believe in the NHS and the wonderful work we all do. However on the 22nd March my father was admitted to a&e following a fall. My mother had called me (I live 2hrs away) following a brief conversation I told her to put the phone down to dial 999 and tell them we suspected a bleed on the brain. The ambulance staff were quick, looked after both mum parents with dignity and care. On arrival to a&e they were almost turned away as they were over stretched in a&e. My father was placed at the very top if the corridor were he was left. When I arrived I was shocked to see so many ambulance staff and waiting patients in the corridor. I was more shocked to see my father who had a gcs score that was dropping lying on his back and vomiting with no staff looking after his airway. As a very experienced itu nurse I then rolled him on his side took his teeth out and shouted for help, the only staff to run to my aid was someone dressed in what looked like an ambulance type uniform who told me I was doing great and then got some staff! Shortly after a very rude member of staff told me it was inconvenience me being in the corridor with my blind mother and practically unconscious father. It was then I realised that there were signs up the corridor saying only one relative per trolly, this is clearly a regular occurrence and something that management need to address urgently. I was told when I asked why he hadn't had a scan yet than it needed approval and that old people fall often and are fine and they were treating him as suspected meningitis. Firstly he is not old! Secondly he had a very strong history of a fall and it was clinically looking more and more like a bleed. He did have a bleed and we ended up staying in a&e until the following afternoon when we were then moved to the medical ward next door. There were so many things wrong, iv documented them all but won't go into details here. One checking my father's infusions I noticed one of them had someone else's name on, when I said to a member of staff shortly after when they were struggling to find enough equipment to give my father the drugs he so desperately needed 'you do know this us not good enough and how would you feel if this was your dad' the nurse welled up, I then realised it's no good taking my frustration out on a staff nurse. The a&e is full of dedicated staff doing a very difficult job, I understand targets and the difficulty in trying to plan services and I have thought long and hard about speaking out. As a nurse I have a duty to speak out when things are not safe and the a&e staff are at breaking point, they are stressed, harassed, not thinking clearly and in the case of my father's infusion making mistakes. I want to take my frustration out on the management who say no one is being put at risk.

Thank you for leaving your comment; I am very sorry to read of your father’s experience. We would be grateful if you could let us know some more details and whether you have already spoken to anyone at the hospital about this; please contact our Patient Services Department at patientservices.dept@worcsacute.nhs.uk or by phone on 0300 123 1733 so that we can look into this matter for you and arrange for you to speak with a senior member of staff. Regards
