"Maternity services : Neonatal, HDU,"

About: The Royal London Hospital

My wife has been discharged a few days ago. We were really impressed by the lack of professionalism. This is the reason why we give one star only. Blood pressure was not taken regularly, we had to call them on several occasions. They were always running out of one medication. Some of them didn't bother to write down which pills were given and at what time! They were asking my wife if she remembered what was given to her and when!! Amazing. When my wife was expressing milk following the recommendations of a midwife specialist in that subject, we received the visit of a non specialist nurse who started to criticise what my wife was doing and then they grabbed the towel from her hands and pour a jar of warm water that we were using into the sink without even asking!! That was really rude. They should have tried these words: "I would like to show you something different, can I..." It was impossible for my wife to rest due to the noise made by the nurses talking out loud and laughing all the time even at 3am (in the HDU and maternity ward) during 6 consecutive days. They were more noisy than the babies! At some point my wife tried to call me when she felt very sick and they refused to give her the mobile phone. She had to beg them!! I heard a lady shouting for help as she was in pain with contractions and the nurse said that they were busy doing something else! They were giving my wife IM injections (through the leg) and didn't bother to put a cotton to stop the bleeding we had to ask for it on several occasions! The list goes on.. but I should also mentioned the rudeness of the neonatal unit. It was our first baby and each time we were asking a question we were told off and explained that they knew how to take care of our baby and made us feel like idiots. They have absolutely no communication skills whatsoever. They took all our questions as an offense for their knowledge and had no patience and time for us. Impossible to have a normal conversation with them. At the end we were not asking any questions, this is how bad it was. Never again.

It is extremely upsetting and disappointing to hear of your wife’s and your experience following the birth of your baby. This kind of behaviour is not acceptable. Please contact the Womens and Childrens Dept quality manager on 020 359 42407 who will help to facilitate further discussion and correspondence so that we can investigate your concerns. Kind regards Barts Health NHS Trust
