"Fantastic!!"

About: Calderdale Royal Hospital

I came in with my 5 year old daughter on Wednesday afternoon after receiving a call from school saying she had fallen off the monkey bars and hurt her arm. We gave details to the receptionist who was very polite and waiting around 10 minutes to see the triage nurse - who was very thorough and sent us straight in for an x-ray. The staff there were genuinely lovely and allowed me to stay with Amelia during the X-ray, she even got a sticker at the end of it for being so brave!! One of the radiographers took us around to the nurse personally and after a very short wait had been told that Amelia had sadly broken both the radius and ulna in her wrist and was being looked into further to see what the next step would be. After conferring with another Dr they decided that a cast would be sufficient and so around we go to that department. We met a lovely member of staff there who was very gentle with Amelia's little hand and told her all about the colours they offer next time we go as this was just the temporary cast. So engrossed in the conversation, it was over in a few minutes and she barely felt a thing. I would like to thank every part of the team who work to such a very high standard to keep all the departments working seamlessly, but most of all for making my daughter feel like an individual, keeping her in conversation, making her laugh and more than anything reassuring her throughout a whole new and quite daunting experience. We arrived at A&E at 1.15pm and was discharged at 3pm - and that isn't to say the hospital was quiet, anything but! We go back on Tuesday to have the tempory cast removed and have her new cast on, but that's not worrying Amelia at all. The hardest decision is whether she wants pink or blue!!

Thank you for taking the time to share Amelia's experience. It is very reassuring to hear we have given compassionate and invdividualised care and turned a potentially frightening experience into a positive one.
