"Appalling Care"

About: St Helier Hospital

69 year old man living alone, admitted to hospital via GP, diagnosed with liver disease. After 4.3 weeks spent in bed, with no shower, not eating, incontinent of faeces he was assessed as needing no care at home. He was not able to walk, get in and out of a chair or bed without falling, he was confused and had not had any kind of social care assessemnt other than saying he would be alright at home. He was readmitted after 24 hours with blood infection having had three falls at home and not eaten anything. Sent home with 13 different types of medication in boxes which he was unable to take. Where is the care and compassion?

We’re very sorry to read about your dissatisfaction with your loved one’s care. The situation you have described is particularly alarming and we would like to look into this as soon as possible to establish what has happened and how this can be prevented from happening. Please could you contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) team on 020 8296 2508 or via email at pals@esth.nhs.uk to provide more details?
