"ward 5"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

My elderly mother, age 88 and has dementia,is currently on ward 5,she has been there now for 1 week. Where do I start: 1. Requested for another pillow for her on Friday to be told" None in the cupboard" 2.Lost slippers, she is wearing somebody else's. 3.Tablets were left on her trolley for her to take,as we explained re her memory she would forget, same thing happened again, only today have they noted it on her board. 4.the place is filthy, stuff on the floor, been there for days, tray for bed,is this ever wiped. 5.looking at her file, states she has refused food, does no one actually then encourage her to Eat? 6. Never yet seen a doctor, staff always few and far between.Spoke to a nurse finally who stated that they were waiting for her to be assessed re care package, she already has this in place, anyway I am taking her home on Wednesday. Elderly people need a lot of care, and that sadly seems to be lacking on this ward. Next time it will be the RVI.

Dear Sir / Madam, Thank you for sharing this with us . I am genuinely sorry that we have failed to provide your Mother with the care that you wanted for her. I can fully appreciate why you feel frustrated. You will understand why I want to act on this immediatley and find out exactly what has happened ? Caring well for older people is a fundemantal part of the work we do as a Trust. We recognise the importance of this and have invested heavily in supporting and traing our staff so that they feel well equipped to provide safe and compassionate care. The content of your review is therefore naturally very concerning to read. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with you to put things right. I am on annual leave this week and about to visit elderly parents of my own - so I would be grateful if, in my absence, you could contact Jo Mackintosh who will ensure this is looked into : Joanne.Mackintosh@nhct.nhs.uk I have already copied your feedback to Michelle Smith, ward manager on Wd 5 - I know she will be very disappointed to read it. With apologies once again, Annie
