"Low risk maternity ward"

About: East Surrey Hospital

I gave birth in November 2014 in the Bluebell room. Both my previous labours started slowly and then rocketed very fast, so was a little upset when sent for a walk as was only 3 cm dilated and talking through contractions ... I instinctively knew that my baby was close ... but my midwife was compassionate about it and I respected their professional decision. After all, all the vital signs pointed to a longer labour run. My midwife was pretty surprised to see me in very late stages of labour just 2 hours later ... straight into Bluebell and 45 minutes later my son was born. My midwife was amazing, serenely calm and confident, and gave him straight to me and was in no hurry to cut cords etc. It felt like a home birth. I will always be grateful for such a beautifully managed birth. And for the aftercare - he was born in his bag with his hand on his head so needed loads of stitches. This was all done in Bluebell room by my midwife once I was ready and my son cuddled up with his dad. Then tea and toast for myself and my husband and we were told that he was welcome to sleep over too. I guess we were exceptionally lucky it was such a quiet night for active labours. The midwife was with us from beginning to end and I was able to stay in Bluebell room for the duration of my stay. The room was lovely for a hospital, very spacious, clean and stacks of clean towels, sheets, wipes, maternity pads etc. The midwife had filled the birthing pool but I was to far gone to use it! What a luxury to have a double bed and a private ensuite bathroom. I especially liked the ambient lighting at night, a really thoughtful touch. It never felt like a hospital. Breakfast in bed was served in the morning and although I was leaving at lunchtime, lunch was also served.
