"My husband had triple by-pass ..."
About: Royal Sussex County Hospital Royal Sussex County Hospital Brighton BN2 5BE
What I liked
My husband had triple by-pass surgery. Can't fault the care. Cardiac unit was good, clean, helpful. He said the food was good. He had to attend for a day prior to the op and they fed me too. Well impressed.
What could be improved
Lack of communication between whoever requests a patient to attend as a day patient prior to an op and the actual ward involved. Instructions are to attend early in the morning, but there may not be a bed.
NHS states there are many missed appointments. My husband missed at least 2 if not 3. Not because of holidays, not being bothered etc. He was a ticking time bomb, no way would he have missed. BUT there is absolutely no communication between some hospitals, in this case Worthing and Brighton. He was initially in Worthing, they knew our address, the by-pass took place in Brighton. THEY had an address that was about 6yrs out of date!! If the present occupier had returned the letter to the hospital, maybe it would have been corrected earlier. But obviously you can't rely on that happening. So surely in these days of fast communication, especially when Worthing must regularly transfer patients to Brighton for treatment, why on earth can't something as simple but essential as a correct address be forwarded? We won't be the only ones this happened to either. So when they moan through the media about missed appointments costing the NHS dearly, let's have ALL the facts and a level playing field. This is not to excuse those who simply can't be bothered to turn up. My dentist charges a fee for missed appointments. Would something similar solve it? They would have to make sure all address/personal information was correct.
