"My consultant treated me like ..."

About: St Mary's Hospital (Newport)

(as the patient),

What I liked

My consultant treated me like a human being. I am only 24 and for years i have been fobbed off with a knee cap problem. After a fall last year it's been a persistant pain and he is the first Dr. to acknowladge there is a real issue- not just random knee pain.

He used words i could understand, no long doctor words, just 24 year old 'here's what the down low' is. To some, that may be too casual an approach but it put me at ease whilst informing me every step of the way. He even put me forward for experimental surgery with his old 'teacher' as he said he could do a nicer job (i perform for a living so any scars i have could do with being neat and small!)

When i said that i love festivals and can't go until this is resolved (because i can't stand) he said 'ah just sit between the beer tent and the stage, you'll still have a great time!!!' and it may have been a throwaway silly comment to cheer me up but he was right, so i'm off to Reading to do just that in August. That's helped with the depression that comes with a long term injury.

His care and diagnosis and help is just priceless to me.

His PA's have been great too with giving me information AND he even wrote me a letter outlining my condition to explain to companies that i have booked concert tickets with WHY i need a seat and cannot stand in General Admission shows. No charge either.

A class service. The consultant in Ortho.

THANK YOU!

Here's to a resolution!

***I also have weekly physio at the laidlaw thanks to my consultant as my GP was too far between appointments. Saw consultant on the Thursday, appointments team at laidlaw called me the next day to set an appointment the following Monday. Amazing. The physio is great too- totally understands all that comes along with an injury- the fatigue, the depression....just so helpful to be understood***

What could be improved

The nurses attitude in out patients. Gossiping about Big Brother rather than showing me which room to go into.

Anything else?

Awfully high car parking charges.
