"I can't work with sore, bleeding hands"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Dermatology (Skin Conditions)

(as the patient),

I have been diagnosed with contact dermatitis in December due to my work (im a cleaner). my hands are in a mess itchy blisters everywhere cracks which are bleeding. GP tried 4 different steroid creams, antibiotics I was on steroid tablets etc. ive been off from my work so much so if im going off again they put me to disaplanery. So I have to work with bleeding hands and still no sign to get an appointment because is a waiting list is 6-8months. how should I work with bleeding hands? I cant afford to go private.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Adri,

Ooh, this sounds painful and very debilitating and I am so sorry you have not been able to consult with us as yet. From your post, I am guessing that the appointment you await is for dermatology, although I may be wrong. I have been assured that the dermatology waiting time of 12 weeks is generally what we are achieving so I am concerned that you have quoted 6-8 months for this. I would be very keen to look into this to establish what is happening with your appointment. If you wish to let me know your name and date of birth I can look into it for you. If you do want to contact me, you can email me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone me on 01563 826222.

Best wishes,

Eunice

Dear Adri

I am very sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having with your skin condition, your work and in getting to see a specialist in NHS Grampian. Eunice has kindly passed your details on to me and I have asked the Unit Operational Manager responsible for the service to look into your waiting time. We have been experiencing some difficulties meeting our targets for dermatology of late but are working hard to address this. Your wait will in part depend on whether your GP made a routine or an urgent referral.

As soon as I hear back from the service I will let you know what is happening with your appointment. In the meantime if I can be of any help please contact me by email at loldroyd@nhs.net or on the telephone on 01224 558449.

Kind regards,

Hi.

Do you have any news about my hospital appointment because my hands are bleeding again and is very painful. My Gp can't prescribe me anything because I have tried everything and I have to clean like this.

Dear Adri

The Dermatology Manager has provided some additional information about your appointment, as below:

The referral was received on 02/02/2015 and no appointment has been arranged as yet. The routine waiting list is currently 26 weeks and you have been on the list for 15 weeks.

It is understandable that as the treatments provided to you so far appear to have been less than effective you will naturally be anxious to be seen as quickly as possible.

We are aware that waiting times within the Dermatology service are longer than we would wish for various reasons. These include the high number of new patients who are referred to the service, the fact that treatments for many will require multiple follow up appointments and the ongoing difficulty in recruitment of suitably trained medical and nursing staff.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the distress that this situation causes along with my assurance that both clinical and managerial staff are working together to improve the current waiting times.

Kindest regards,

Unit Operational Manager

Adri, I understand this is not the news you would like to hear but at least you now know how long you will have to wait. If you do not receive an appointment by the 26 week mark please get in touch with me again.

Kind regards

Linda
