"Privacy & dignity + infection control"

About: Freeman Hospital

In Main Xray dept. approx 10.30 21/04/15 A man was brought from a ward. He was dressed in a open backed hospital gown. He was 'parked' at the entrance of the MRI waiting room. The gown was fastened around his neck but was draped down his sides exposing his sides and thighs. I spoke to the porter who brought him. I pointed out that the pt was indecently exposed He roughly pulled the gown down at the sides & said "Thats all right" the pt tried to tuck it under his legs. The chair the man was in was a big one with a space between the seat and the back. His buttocks and thigh were exposed & people waiting for xrays could see this clearly. Staff going past included radiographers, nurses, student nurses, student radiographers, porters, office staff. Drs So much for privacy & dignity The pt was sitting without pants on a plastic chair. Had that chair been washed prior to him being put in it? I doubt it Was the chair washed after the pt was taken back to his ward? Again I doubt it. So much for infection control

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on NHS Choices about your recent experience at the Freeman Hospital. We are unable to identify the patient that you observed in the X-Ray department due to the number of patients seen during the day and the number of wards that they attend from. However it is clearly not acceptable that the patient’s dignity was not maintained in this manner. We understand the distress that this would cause to the patient and others in the department. We have reported your feedback to all of our ward sisters and staff within the X-Ray and Portering Departments to ensure that they ensure that every patient’s privacy and dignity is maintained at all times. We would like to apologise that you needed to bring this incident to our attention and would like to assure you that we have taken this very seriously.
