"My experience of IBD Nurse care"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Medicine (wards 8, 10, 11, 14, 18 & 27)

(as the patient),

I have been a patient of the IBD service for five years after being diagnosed with ulcerativ colitis. The attitude of the IBD nurses at the RAH is poor and unhelpful. I've tried to call the helpline a number of times and seldom get a response. When they do get back to you, I've been told off because they don't think that my problem is urgent enough. I've spoken to my hospital Doctor about this, only to be told that they are very busy and that there are more needy patients waiting on calls. I thought every patient had the right to be treated with respect and be listened to. I only transferred to this hospital because I heard of what a good service they provided. It would seem that things have changed in recent years. Maybe the nurses should look at the way they talk to sick people. I'm so disgusted

Dear Unhappy IBD

Thank you for sharing your experiences of the IBD Service at the RAH.

From your posting, I can pick up your unhappiness and I would like to know a little bit more about the way you feel and what it is that has made you feel this way.

For now, I want you to know that you are absolutely right when you say "every patient has the right to be treated with respect and be listened to."

If you would like to give me a call sometime that is good for you, I would be happy to listen. My number is 0141 201 5932 - I can phone you back if you want.

Yours sincerely,

Niall Mc Grogan
