"Childrens A&E a shambles"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

Entered A&E this evening at 7:30 after calling 111 and having a nurse call back to say go to A&E straight away, at 9:30 at least 10 patience had come and gone and we were still sat there with our 7 month old. The nurse who had done the triage spotted us and realised that we had indeed been forgotten about! In this day and age with all the technology available and they rely on someone printing notes to be put in a doctors tray so that kids can been seen by the doctors?! The triage nurse was lovely and couldn't apologise enough called us straight into a room to be seen. However when they went out to see who was available the doctor on duty said it was a 2 and a half hour wait anyway so it was reasonable for us to have not been seen yet. Well I disagree when children have come and gone only being given ibuprofen or nappy cream and my 7 month old still sat there with the symptoms of a twisted bowel the attitude of the lady doctor in my opinion was unforgivable! We were worried and tired having sat in a busy extremely hot waiting room for that long to see the doctor.

Response from South Tyneside District Hospital

Thank you for posting on NHS Choices your recent experience of our paediatric A&E service. I can fully understand the stress and anxiety of having to attend the A&E Department with a seven month old child and having to wait to be reviewed can only add to the level of stress. Obviously, I cannot comment on the clinical symptoms or outcomes of those children seen before you, however, I will copy your comments to the respective managers of the service to ensure they are shared with the doctors in the department for future reference as positive, effective communication is one aspect of our care which should be delivered by all. I do hope your seven month old did not have anything too serious wrong and is making a good recovery Kind regards Lorrain B Lambert Chief Executive
