"A & E Experience"

About: Newham General Hospital

I was unfortunate enough to attend the A&E department for a complication following gallbladder surgery where I was suffering with severe chest pains. The standard of care received from this department was appalling and I intend on formerly complaining. The level of service from the Dr's and Nurses in question was disgusting and im still feeling the after effects with a damaged nerve 6 days on from an attempted blood test on one arm and a small swelling on the other arm from another failed blood test. The lack of empathy and care just wasn't acceptable with nurses asking me to undress in plain site of waiting patients. Leaving me in the middle of a hallway whilst a porter and x ray specialist argued over what gown i should be wearing and not offering any pain medication or anti sickness tablets until i was leaving the department 6 hours later. I appreciate the NHS is under enourmous amounts of stress these days but there is no excuse for bad manners and lack of basic care.

We are very sorry to read how unhappy you were with the standard of care you received whilst being treated by staff in our A&E Department. It is not acceptable for our staff to treat patients with a lack of empathy and care at a time when they are at their most vulnerable. Please accept our apologies. Thank you for highlighting these issues. Even though we see that you are going to raise this formally, your comments here have been forwarded to the A&E Department so that they are able to start to make changes where needed. Kind regards Barts Health NHS Trust
