"After A&E, the care I received probably saved my..."

About: Conquest Hospital

Following an unusual amount of floaters in my vision, I contacted my opticians who advised me to attend A&E at the Conquest without delay. A&E was not the best experience I have had at the Conquest, and it was near the end of the afternoon when I was seen by a junior doctor (a GP in training, I believe they described themself) who checked my eyes over and made copious notes which they said they would pass to the eye department that evening. Early the following morning I received a call from the ophthalmology department asking me to attend that same day. Living in Rye we had to make arrangements, but I arrived with my wife (who I guessed may be needed to drive me home) just before lunchtime. I was fitted in as an additional patient and saw the consultant within a hour. The consultant thoroughly examined my eyes and advised that I had a retinal tear in the left eye - this needed emergency surgery to ensure that the retina did not detach (which l understand can result in the loss of sight). I asked when this could be undertaken, as presumably there was a degree of urgency? The reply was that they would carry out laser surgery immediately. The eye is now in the process of post operative healing and remains pretty sore, but an initial check has indicated that all is currently looking good - literally. I am extremely grateful to the consultant and team. You cannot obtain better care than this anywhere in the world, at any price.
