I was moved to ward L38 from the HDU ward L39 where I had a fantastic care and was well looked after following an operation on both thumbs.I had amputated my left thumb and the right one halfway through, so both had to be reattached and both hands were bandaged up. My stay at ward L38 was just for 2 days out of the 9 days spent at the hospital and I have to say that I wished I was never moved there. The staff practically left me to fend for myself in my room. A care assistant came to my room the morning after I was moved to ward 38 and gave me a towel and bowl to wash myself and I lifted up my bandaged hands and asked them to please help me but they said I would have to wash myself! They went out and came back with some bed bath wipes and left them on the table for me. I managed to clean myself as best as I could after no one bothered to answer the buzzer.I buzzed several times for oral morphine for the pains as I couldn't self administer because of my thumbs and the nurse would only give me paracetamol (knowing fully well that it wasn't sufficient for the pains) saying the oral morphine had been taken off my medications. I even begged them for a stronger pain relief and they said they would get me some ibuprofen but never came back. The night nurse eventually gave me some after i had endured the pains all day (apparently, oral morphine was still part of my prescription). I practically begged to have my sheets and gown changed all day and no one could be bothered until I asked to change them by myself around 10pm. I had to beg 4 different people for my water jug to be refilled, buzzed for help when I felt sick and had to walk with the catheter and pains to ask for a sick bowl.I ended up being sick all over my self as no one bothered to help on time. I'm in tears as I type this as I can't really manage to describe how inhumane the treatment I got was! I don't want to believe that the treatment I got at ward 38 had to do with my race but the attitude of the staff made me feel otherwise. I had my dressing taken off by a doctor on the ward round just before 9 and for well over an hour, I was left waiting for it to be redressed. They didn't even consider how distressing it is for me to be left seeing my reattached and smelly thumb for that long.
