"Fantastic care from Ward 207, Theatre and Ward 203"

About: Royal Derby Hospital

I was admitted to Ward 203 yesterday morning for a discectomy. The nurses, anaesthetist, the surgeon and team were all friendly and reassuring and answered all my questions. The nurses went out of their way to make me feel comfortable, including making up a bed for me as my back made me uncomfortable sitting in a chair. They were quick to cope with the order of the procedures changing round and quickly had my paperwork done so I could go in earlier than expected. The porter who took me to theatres was lovely and helped put me at ease, as were the anaesthetic staff who looked after me really well as I went to sleep. The recovery nurses were very attentive and found me my glasses as soon as I woke up (something I had been worried about). I was taken to Ward 203 and although I could hear a lot of bells ringing and the ward seemed busy I was quickly brought food and water and when I was ready I was encouraged to try walking. I had very little pain and was able to move around, and I was told I might be able to go home. I was very keen to go home if I was able so they quickly arranged for the physiotherapist to come and see me and check I was ok and to give me exercises to do and advice about how to manage. I was able to go home at 4.30pm that afternoon with pain relief and a spare dressing in case I needed it and a follow up appointment the next week. I was so nervous when I went in in the morning before my surgery but everyone was very kind and efficient, and I really felt cared for and looked after. I am sorry to say I can't remember the names of all the people that cared for me, although they did all introduce themselves. The pain I had before surgery seems to have completely dissapeared so I am absolutely thrilled!
