Recently I have been struggling to deal with an eating disorder, I have had to be admitted to hospital on five separate occasions in the last month or so. I have always followed the advice of the 111 service, who have told me that I must go to the a and e department. As a member of a nursing team on another ward at the hospital, I am experienced in knowing what quality care is, which includes treating every patient with dignity and respect regardless of what their condition is. Unfortunately when I was admitted to the observations ward last week the quality of care was appalling, the nurses that were on shift showed no respect and were highly unprofessional. The biggest complaint of all that I have is the fact that when the nurses were doing their handover to the day staff, I could in fact hear absolutely everything that they were saying about not only myself but the other patients as well. As a person who has little self esteem and confidence, hearing what a particular nurse had said about me quite literally sent my confidence plummeting. When I mentioned to one of the day staff nurses about hearing all of the handover they accused me of intentionally listening in, I replied that I wasn't doing that, and I could hear everything that they were saying from my bed space. The biggest thing of all was the laughing about me wanting to become a nurse, which has left me feeling extremely hurt. May I also emphasize that just because a person has a mental illness, doesn't mean that they can't become a nurse, in fact I truly believe that having an illness whether it be physical or psychological can enable a person to be a more empathetic nurse.
