"I was a daily visitor to the maternity ..."
About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) Truro TR1 3LJ
What I liked
I was a daily visitor to the maternity ward over a period of 1 week whilst my daughter was in care.
In my view the level of care was varied. Good during the day but very poor during the evenings and nights.
What could be improved
Efficiency of the department is in need of improvement. I believe much time was wasted due mainly to the department being understaffed and staff not being able to priorities effectively. Issues that should be dealt with in minutes took hours or even days to resolve. I can only imagine beds remained occupied unnecessarily adding to the burden of the already limited resources of the NHS. The blame for this in my view is with management which seemed to be non existent at Treliske.
Although most of the staff were pleasant and did a great job I did observe some very bad attitudes towards members of the public and was made aware of a lower than adequate level of care to a patient from time to time. In my view this is unacceptable.
At a time when they should be joyful at the birth of their new baby, my daughter and her husband experienced a rather traumatic time at Treliske Hospital maternity ward. Their stay was unnecessarily prolonged by some of the staff not being able to deal with matters within reasonable timescales.
In one of the worst incidents, medication was left to the patient to administer without proper instruction. As a result it was left until the following day - some 12-14 hours later before it was administered.
Overall, I would not recommend anybody having a baby at Treliske.
